synopsis

The taxi driver refused to be paid in silence. Athens, end of july 1974. The Greek military junta has collapsed the night before. Arriving from Cologne, Germany, my mother insists. The taxi driver does not answer. "May my hand wither, if I take money from you!", he utters finally. He had recognized her voice. She had been one of the three or four principal voices of the greek radio program of the International German Radio Broadcast Deutsche Welle, a daily program that nearly all Greeks were listening to in secret during the dark years of the dictatorship of the colonels.

Words of Resistance tells the story of the men and women who created this program and, forced into exile by the fascist regime, continued to fight for seven years to keep up the dignity and the hope of a whole people.

This films tries to uncover for the first time the important part they played during and after the dictatorship and indicates their place in collective memory today. It questions the power of the critical, politically engaged speech and redefines its necessity today.

director's note

My film about the famous Greek progam of the Deutsche Welle signifies the dilemma the Word must face when it tries to become action ("praxis"), when it tries to bridge the gap that exists almost inevitably between poetical ethics and political demands.

Kathimerini, Athens - 19.3.2010

Did the Greek radio program of the Deutsche Welle impress on the conscience of the people or is it just a memory today?

The collective memory of an epoch isn't rigid, it is ever changing. It consists of individual memories but is more than the sum of all parts. The Greek radio program of the Deutsche Welle is history today, but its actuality consists in the example it has set with regard to the possibilities and the influence of critical speech. My film questions the power of the critical, politically engaged speech and redefines its necessity today. It signifies the dilemma the Word must face when it tries to become action ("praxis"), when it tries to bridge the gap that exists almost inevitably between poetical ethics and political demands.

Does 'politically engaged speech' today still exist and what do you mean exactly by referring to it? What about the expression of a politician?

As I understand it, critical speech takes position in specific historical circumstances. It is devoid of clichés and ideological prejudices. Sometimes it has to denounce, but its main role is to propose new ideas. Only in this way it can resist commonplace and mainstream opinion. I called my film Words of Resistance on purpose. It is also about the resistance of the Word. Critical speech has not disappeared today but it is hardly audible. The economic censorship prevailing in the mass media transforms every single thought into a publicity slogan. It has yet to be shown that the Internet might become an alternative. There is also a lot of disappointment and distrust, since the promises by political ideologues aren't credible anymore. This concerns the second part of your question. Obviously the expression of a politician is the exact contrary of truly "engaged" speech.

Forty years later, what remains of the Greek dictatorship today? Is it of any importance in the everyday life of a Greek citizen?

Faulkner said : "The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past." It's like a subterranean river that emerges from time to time. In other words: it horrifies me, when sitting in a café, for example, I hear customers regret the "law and order" they pretend to have enjoyed under the regime of the colonels. It happens quite often these days. The loss of historical references and the general confusion is very alarming.

Why do you mention the riots, in december 2008, in your film?

The film is set in present time. I couldn't decently omit these events. They took place while we were shooting the film. They prove that a certain historic development has come to its end. The political and ideological system of the "metapolitefsi" (installed after the restoration of democracy in 1974) has gone bankrupt. I am surprised that people wonder why the disappointed youth - a youth with no perspectives for the future - reacts violently to the violence exemplified not only by the murder in cold blood of a 15 years old boy by the police but before all by the incompetence, indifference and impunity of corrupt governments these last 20, 30 years. The riots work as a remote counterpoint in the film. After the restoration of democracy, certain members of the Greek program of the Deutsche Welle have become politicians and governed this country for years, others held highly responsible posts in the media. I do not want to generalize and speak about the hypothetic failure of a generation  - the heroic generation of the the Athens Polytechnic uprising 1973 - but asking them if society today comes close to the society they dreamt of and fought for, the only answer I got was : no!

Eleftherotypia, Athens - 22.3.2010

How did you get the idea of this film?

All my films deal with the subject of collective memory. Certain historic epochs believed very strongly in the power of the critical Word. They felt threatened by it. The Chinese emperor Ts'in Che Hoang had all books in his kingdom burnt, with the sole exception of medical essays and cooking recipes. Closer to us, the regime of the colonels feared the Greek radio program of the Deutsche Welle to such an extent that they decided to interfere with jamming transmitters. Today, hardly a generation later, politicians in Greece and elsewhere in Europe consider the journalists and intellectuals on the TV screen as completely harmless. They are right, of course. My film questions the power of the critical, politically engaged speech and redefines its necessity today.

How did you approach the subject?

As in my film about Ulrike Meinhof (1994), I confront reminiscences from my childhood in Germany with the memories of the editors of the program and the collective memory of the epoch. My mother had been one of the three or four principal voices of the greek radio program of the Deutsche Welle, a daily program that nearly all Greeks were listening to in secret during the dark years of the dictatorship of the colonels. I used various materials. S-8 film for my memories, 16mm archive footage that I have "treated" (changement of colours, the film speed, the grain, the sound etc.) and video for the interviews. I wanted to create a cinematographic space where the different, personal reminiscences could be put into relation to the present time, and so make possible a clear and vivid representation of the history of these years, or rather the collective memory that remains.

How would you describe your film?

It is a film that tells tells the story - of the men and women who fought the dictatorship with critically engaged speech- by means of a specific language and field of vision, so as to make plain its actuality in present time. It incorporates the revolt of the greek youth in december 2008 as a distant counterpoint, because it reflects the political disenchantment and the loss of references that threaten our conscience today. A state of things that drove young people into rebellion. In my film I try to signify the dilemma the Word must face when it tries to become action ("praxis"), when it tries to bridge the gap that exists almost inevitably between poetical ethics and political demands. This question was explosive then, it is still important today. My film is aimed at the young.

This film relates childhood memories. The director uses them masterfully, retracing simultaneously with great cinematographic skill the course of History. He is looking for responses to the crucial question of what sense politically engaged speech may still have, and what is the personal attitude people maintain towards their struggles of the past.

Avgi, 24.3.2010

An esthetic film, images sometimes out of focus, often black and white. The Word is powerful, it carries weight. "I address the young", explains Timon Koulmasis. There is no dictatorship in his country (Greece) anymore but the critical speech has been lost within a generation, and today the political and economic forces try to convince the youth that another world is impossible.

A voice of hope in difficult times!

The greek program of the Deutsche Welle established a line of defense against fascist opinions, against fascist ideologies that were developing in Greece, against the language of the dictators. This seems to have been an important contribution against the rise of fascism in the country, the defense against a corrupted language, against the fascistic rhetorics of the military dictatorship.

From the first moment on, we developed an activity and the first step was to activate the Word. The Word was the creating force. The Word being Thought, an ideological attitude, consciousness.

reminescence

It is the privilege of a child to recall men and places in arbitrary chronological order, not to care about the probability of an event, its causes and consequences. It does not look for the sense of the story, of the stories...

Let's stay a while then in the vast living room of our villa. The white flowers of the old cherry tree shine through the window panes. My mother's colleagues are sitting on the canape around a low table - no, I should say my mother's friends. They may be colleagues in the slightly decayed office rooms in the center of Cologne, whose walls are plastered with posters and pamphlets; they may be colleagues in the nearby cafe where they eat ice cream together on recess and where an unfortunate, mute parrot is kept prisoner in a dimly lighted cage: at home they are friends.

They are young, they are funny when speaking German with their greek accent, they're cheerful, vivid, noisy, they discuss incessantly, sing once in a while (then a shade of sadness passes over their faces, but hope remains - the child I've been is not mistaken), quarrel all the time. They play cards, some go to the casino (my father, much older than they are, disapproves in silence), loose every time. What about it? Times are difficult... They dream about freedom and return to Greece. And they are charming with us, the children they will see grow up in Germany, far from their native country.

Silent images. Faces and figures appear and disappear in my memory: Vassilis, whom we loved most, a small baldheaded man, always in movement, as timeless as Ulysses himself, words and gestures always close to an explosion. Giorgos, the taciturn giant with a thundering voice (when he speaks...), black hair, black beard. His impenetrable eyes gleam dangerously. Alek with his hoarse voice, bursting into laughter behind a cloud of smoke - but they all smoke like a chimney. Angelos, Lenin's double, with his goatee, the unquiet and disquieting eyes. Kostas wears a tight-fitting, old, white leatherjacket and is the only one to laugh when playing on words in the two languages. And Karolos, all the others...

The vision of a child is unjust but it reminds us that behind the mask that posterity puts on the faces of villains and heroes, there are men and women, and that is they who write history. And it was these men and women I fixed in my memory for a moment on the canape in our living room like on a polaroid, who wrote, between 1969 and 1974, the glorious pages of the Greek radio program of the Deutsche Welle.

Film analysis, by Iannis Leondaris (Professeur at the Aristoteleion University, Thessalonica, Greece)

Αν δεχτούμε ότι συλλογική μνήμη είναι «αυτό που οι ομάδες δημιουργούν με το παρελθόν τους»θα πρέπει να αναρωτηθούμε βλέποντας την ταινία Λόγος και Αντίσταση, με ποιο τρόπο η συλλογική μνήμη συνδιαλέγεται με την κινηματογραφική εικόνα. Ο Κουλμάσης επιλέγει μια λύση απλή και αποτελεσματική. Τοποθετεί τα πρόσωπα της ταινίας του το ένα απέναντι στο άλλο σαν μάρτυρες ενός γεγονότος οι οποίοι εξετάζονται κατ’αντιπαράσταση. Κατασκευάζει ένα πολυφωνικό παιχνίδι συνεντεύξεων. Το μοντάζ του είναι σκληρό και αποκαλυπτικό. Εναλλαγές προσώπων, εναλλαγές λόγου. Μπροστά στα μάτια μας αναδύεται ατόφια η ιστορική αφήγηση ως διαλεκτική, ως «αγώνας λόγων». Ακριβώς γι’ αυτό γινεται συναρπαστική. Ο θεατής ακούει απόψεις που διίστανται, απόψεις που συγκλίνουν. Ο Κουλμάσης αναπαράγει με τον τρόπο αυτό την αίσθηση που έχει ένα μικρό παιδί όταν ακούει τους ενήλικες να συζητούν, να συμφωνούν, να διαφωνούν. Κανένα υποκειμενικό σχόλιο. Ο αφηγητής της ταινίας αντιστέκεται στον πειρασμό του σχολιασμού, του συμπεράσματος. Αφήνει όλα τα ερωτήματα ανοιχτά. Αναθέτει το καθήκον της «γνώμης» στον ίδιο το θεατή; Είναι ο λόγος όπλο αντίστασης; Μέχρι ποιο σημείο; Ποιος ο ρόλος του ένοπλου αγώνα ενάντια σε μια δικτατορία; Τι σημαίνει εντέλει «αντιστέκομαι»;
